Carex panicea, commonly known as carnation sedge, is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial with narrow, dark green to blue-green leaves forming neat, grass-like tussocks. It produces inconspicuous greenish-brown flower spikes in summer that rise slightly above the foliage, providing subtle texture rather than showy blooms.
This species is valuable for wetland and damp meadow planting, offering cover for small wildlife and supporting biodiversity along pond edges and moist soils. Its compact, upright habit makes it ideal for naturalistic water gardens, pond margins, and wetland restoration schemes.
