Iris louisiana, commonly known as Louisiana iris 'Black Gamecock', is a striking clump-forming perennial with tall, sword-shaped green leaves that form strong vertical growth. In late spring to early summer it produces large, dramatic flowers in very deep purple, appearing almost black, with subtle yellow markings at the throat that enhance their richness and depth.
This cultivar is highly valued for its bold colouring and strong architectural presence in wetland planting schemes. Its robust habit and preference for consistently moist conditions make it particularly well suited to pond margins, bog gardens, and shallow water, where it provides both visual impact and seasonal interest.
