Primula elatior, commonly known as oxlip, is a charming spring-flowering perennial with soft yellow, bell-shaped flowers carried in loose clusters above pale green, lightly wrinkled foliage. The blooms have a delicate, nodding form and a subtle fragrance, giving the plant a gentle, woodland character well suited to naturalistic planting.
This species is particularly valuable for wildlife, providing an early source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects emerging in spring. Its natural association with meadows and open woodland makes it an excellent choice for biodiversity-rich gardens and traditional wildflower settings.
